Description: This study examines the relationship between the administrator of a pension plan [the principal] and the actuary [the agent]. The objective is to design a contract for both the plan administrator and the actuary so that the actuary provides the appropriate level of information to the plan administrator. The study uses a simple model- one principal [the pension fund administrator] and one agent [the actuary] in a one-period model. Description: Shapiro 1990 documented some of the criteria used by actuaries when selecting the assumptions for actuarial valuations. He noted, however, that many of these criteria are often were in conflict with one another. This paper uses expected utility theory to model this process of choosing actuarial assumption when faced with potentially conflicting criteria. The three criteria considered are prudence, best estimate and conservativeness.

Description: This paper presents a generalization of the principal current methods of financial decision making. In the way physical sciences benefit from new general theories that encompass those theories they succeed, the science of finance can benefit from the development of a general framework that encompasses many of the current methods of financial analysis. The paper develops a general framework for financial decision-making from a few simple axioms of rational economic behavior.

Description: In this paper we will describe how richer actuarial programs can be provided if a number of schools with smaller programs combine resources by forming a regional cooperative or consortium. We have already formed our own consortium, the Southwest Actuarial Education and Research Consortium SWAERC. The strategies proposed here have already been used in SWAERC, and we will illustrate each of them by describing our own experience with it.

Because the process of reading, or decoding, graphs is more complex than reading text, graphs are vulnerable to many sources of abuse. This is the abstract of a paper that will help creators design more effective graphs and will help viewers recognize misleading graphs. The paper summarizes guidelines for designing graphs that show important numerical information and gives examples of commonly encountered graphs that mislead and hide information.
